Sally trained as a child from 7 years old, first in elocution lessons, as no one could understand what she was saying in her thick Yorkshire accent, then at the York Academy of Dramatic Arts, undertaking external exams and local performances at a number of Yorkshire theatres. At an early age she recognised the therapeutic benefits of drama and with this in mind undertook a therapeutic theatrical training in Dramatherapy at the University of Hertfordshire in 1999.
Prior to and since opening Drama Queens, Sally has worked in a variety of settings such as primary schools, secondary schools and alternative educational centres, on issues including bullying and friendship, and eating disorders, developing a specialisation in working with adolescents and teenagers. She also recently fund-raised to start and maintain drama and dramatherapy groups for older people. With Drama Queens, as well as running weekly classes, Sally has produced and directed several plays with her Youth Theatre, most recently ‘Punk Rock’ at 88 London Road. She also provides one-to-one drama coaching, with great success, for students preparing for local exams, festivals, and National Youth Theatre auditions.
Sally loves working with all children, due to their fantastic imaginations and natural creativity, and has a special interest in bringing new relevant writing to teenage groups. She believes that theatre and performing should be open to all children regardless of ability and budget. Sally is a trained singer and currently performs as part of the renowned Brighton Goes Gospel’s Performance choir. She lives in Brighton with her creative family and numerous pets.
